TIPS are dependent on what Browser your using. TIP function (or feature) will be found under different menus depending on which browser you use. Browser version changes may move (or delete) the menu location of the feature (and TIP).
7 CHECK PC, NETWORK, SL SERVER SPEED (Is SL running slow?)
I have logged into SL on some nights and wondered why everything SLOWED down. Well, there is a quick check known as the LAG Meter to see what hardware is running below par. Go to the menu “Advanced” (Ctrl-Alt-Shift-D) and select “Performance Tools --> LAG Meter”. The Meter has two sizes small & large by just clicking a small button in its lower left-corner. All three lights should be green. If any data stream or operation goes below 10fps (frames per second), that light will go from Green to Yellow or to RED. Green is above 10fps, while Yellow & Red is a slow operation and laggy.
CLIENT light is for your PC speed (or Mac)
NETWORK is your Connection to the internet (Phone line, Cable, Wireless, Broadband, Satellite, etc.)
SERVER is the SL Server computer in San Francisco
8 TAKE GREAT SL PHOTOS (better pictures)
If you are taking aerial photos or long distance shots, you will have to change your “Draw Distance” to get ALL the detail for a wonderful photo. The SL browser is setup to draw objects only 160 meter away from you. You can change this setting for that ONE great shot, but then set it back after that photo or you will SLOW down your system. Go to Edit (top menu), pick “Preferences” and pick the “Graphics” tab. There is a “custom” box, check it. Look for the “Draw Distance” slider and move it right for up to 400 - 500 meters. Click Apply and OK. Now wait as the additional as a more Detailed View is drawn of this Land. (Be sure to set the Preference back to 160 meters after you have finished taking those Wonderful Pictures.)
9 TURN-OFF CHAT TEXT TYPING (still your hands)
When you are Chatting with someone in SL, you will notice your hands TYPING the message. You can turn-off the typing animation via your Preferences. Go to SL Preferences (Ctrl-P) and click “Chat”. Now under Chat Options on that panel, un-check the box for “Play typing animation when chatting”.
10 CHECK CPU MEMORY USAGE ( ONLY Mac, RAM Check )
Only for Mac, sorry. SL operation will SLOW down and Lag increase, if you are running out-of-memory because your computer will start saving data to the Hard Disk. You can check memory usage all the time on a Mac running OS X (Tiger or Leopard) using the Activity Monitor. This monitor can be placed in the DOCK as a Pie Chart.
I have 2 GB of RAM and use from 1/2 to 3/4 running the SL browser, TextEdit and TimeEqualsMoney. To find the Activity Monitor:
(1) Go to Applications --> Utilities --> Activity Monitor. Run this application.
(2) Select VIEW(top menu) --> Dock icon --> Show Memory Usage
(3) Try to keep 1/4 or more of the Memory Pie Chart “GREEN” in your DOCK.
11 ADD X,Y,Z Location values to your SL Window (add XYZ after land’s name)
As you walk around the landscape, you can add the X,Y,Z location to Viewer 2. This location coordinate is great for returning to the same spot of interest in the future. Go to the “World” menu and select “Show --> Coordinates”.
